These two photos illustrate how dramatically Newcastle’s Quayside has changed in recent decades

This pub on Shakespeare Street was opened almost two centuries ago by a circus clown, who named it after a horse-riding muscleman

James Cook was landlord of the George IV Inn, he saved around 50 people from drowning in the Tyne
